DISABILITY SPORTS IN MALAYSIAN PERSPECTIVE
The first national competition was held in Kuala Lumpur in 1982. It started with two sports that are swimming and athletics. The competition held once in every 2 years, been organised by Malaysia Rehabilitation Council (MCR) with the support of Malaysia Welfare Support Service Development. It was held in various parts of the nation, until 18th May 1989, when the National Council for the Disability Sports was established and had been given the task to organise the competition. The following competition was held in Malacca in 1990, followed by Terengganu (1992), Johor (1994) and Sarawak (1996).
In 1996, the council name was changed to the Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC). The role and status of MPC is recognised by the government. As a sole body, MPC coordinates all the sporting activities for all the people with disabilities in Malaysia.
In 1998, the National Competition for People with Disability has been renamed as the Sukan Paralimpiad Malaysia (SPM). The twelfth edition of the games in 2004 in Kuala Lumpur successfully assembled a total of 1,152 athletes from 15 states in Malaysia (including Labuan) competing in 20 sports.
History of the Paralympics Sports in Malaysia
Competition for people with disability in Malaysia started way back in 1969. At that time, the response was not encouraging and not many activities were organised due to financial reasons (lack of funds). With the establishment of Malaysian Paralympic Council (MPC) in 1989, the Paralympics movement became more organised and systematic. Several sports were contested in various states. Then it became a national level competition with the participation of various categories of disability. MPC is the sole body that is equivalent to the Malaysian Olympic Council.
Participation of the Malaysian athletes at the international scene, started in 1969 when the late H.M Storey, after meeting with Sir Ludwig Guttmann, came back to Malaysia and established the Malaysian power lifting team that represented Malaysia at the Stoke Mandeville Games in 1970 and the Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh in the same year. They managed to bring back a silver medal, which was a fine achievement from the Malaysian athletes. MPC’s affiliation with the International Paralympics Committee (IPC) and also the FESPIC Federation, enabled Malaysia to participate for the first time in the 3rd FESPIC Games which was held in Hong Kong in 1982. Since then, Malaysia never missed to take part in the FESPIC Games and our country even hosted the games in 2006.
