History of Penang Malaysia
History of Penang began in 1786, when Captain Francis Light made an agreement with the Sultan of Kedah. He acquired Penang on behalf of the East Indies Company from the Sultan and in return, the company promised to provide security protection to Kedah from its strong neighbors. Up to 1800, Light also managed to get a land area across the island. The area is called Province Wellesley (by the name of the Indian Governor) which is now called Seberang Perai.
